Lean into the Church Library Treasure Trove Bookshelves of Books at Stonnington Church

The Stonnington Community Uniting Church Library brings together theological books, inspiring stories, current life issues and writers who have a faith perspective. The library has close ties to our Book Chat group. The books are a resource for members and associates of our Church Community including the Progressive Christian Network.

Why do we have a Library?

Stonnington Community Uniting Church has a long history of education, and learning. Enquiring minds and robust discussion have always been encouraged. We do not always agree but we exchange ideas with open minds rather than an adversarial attitude. To maintain a library is an extension of our attitudes and beliefs.

What types of books are in the Library?

The content of the library reflects a spirit of open mindedness. There are titles which you may not associate with a church and yet their inclusion makes perfect sense when seen in the light of inclusion, diversity, learning and faith.

Theological Books

There are theological books such as Joan Chittister’s “The Friendship of Women: the hidden tradition of the Bible”, John Crossan’s “God and Empire” Jesus against Rome, then and now” and the beautiful book by Rev Dr Rob Gallacher “The Colour of Prayer: Contemplating Christian Icons”

Biographies and Inspirational Stories

For those people looking for inspiration in their own lives biographies continue to resonate with readers A re-read of Albert Facey’s “A Fortunate Life” or Melissa Fleming’s “A Hope more powerful than the sea” may provide an overdue reset of your thinking your beliefs and your faith.

Life Issues

Books that look at the life-changing issues that face society are also available A quiet read of “Beyond Grief coping with the loss of a loved one” by John Helm or “See what you made me do power control and domestic abuse” by Jess Hill may be more helpful to start with than a difficult conversation in person

And so the list of books continues. Perhaps you would like to explore generational equity, the beauty of nature, early Australian history or Recipes and thoughts for daily living The collection of books will definitely surprise, challenge, and even delight.
