Can a church support artistic expression in the community?

There is a regular stream of artistic expression at the Stonnington Community Uniting Church. Our special interests and community groups are awash with singers, instrumentalists and orators. Are you also aware that our performing arts connection extends outside the walls of our beautiful Burke Road and Coppin Street Church?  We also have connections with a theatre and a dance school. Who knew?

The East Malvern Congregational Church at 29 Burke Road, East Malvern had a cooperative relationship with the then Ewing Memorial Church dating back to the 1900’s. In the early 1970’s the Congregational Church members entered into negotiations with the then Malvern City Council for the sale of their Church and Hall for use as a Community Arts Centre.

Malvern Theatre Company found a new home soon after and has, in the 60+ years since its inception, become one of Melbourne’s leading non-professional theatre companies.

A committee of experienced volunteers administers the not-for-profit, incorporated association. The Theatre Company has a core of very skilled, volunteer backstage, technical and front-of-house staff. Malvern Theatre Company engages directors who attract actors and designers of very high calibre.

With an audience drawn from approximately 1,300 loyal subscribers, the Company usually provides a season of 5 plays annually.

Malvern Theatre Co. Inc. is a registered charity. By offering tickets for their Charity Preview performances to various organisations for fund-raising purposes, they support these charities and encourage engagement with the theatre company.

The Jazz CentreThe Jazz Centre Logo

A privately run school for Performing Arts has been using the former Sunday School Building of the Ewing Memorial Church at 54 Burke Road, East Malvern for many, many years. The Jazz Centre, with Gaynor, is a hive of activity and smiles.

The Jazz Centre seeks to show children the magic and enjoyment of dance, to teach technique and skill of dance at the highest level, and to help and nurture our students to develop their full potential in grace, musicality and artistry of stage presentation. As any dancer will tell you, there is so much great stuff to learn beyond the steps and routines.

East Malvern is a vibrant community. The Performing Arts for children and adults is an important part of that vibrancy. Stonnington Community Uniting Church continues to recall its past whilst extending an inclusivity approach into the future.
